Candle Making Instructions
With my easy to follow candle making instructions, anyone can do it.
If you can boil water you can make candles. It's fun and easy!
For our first candle project we’re going to use soy wax. If you have been using other types of natural wax for making candles in the past, these basic candle making instructions are a great foundation for making soy candles.
Materials Needed:
Candle Making Kit
- Soy Wax (for this candle project, we're using Ecosoya CB Advanced)
- Glass Container (9oz Martini Glass) for fun and style!
- Wick(size 4-5 100% lead free cotton pre-tabbed wick)
- Wick Stick (popsicle stick with hole in the middle)
- Fragrance oil
- Soy color chips (1 red chip)
- Pouring Pitcher (small-holds 2 pound of wax)
- Thermometer
- Double Boiler
- Double sided wick sticker
- Stick (for Stirring) unused paint stirrer works well.
Prepare to have fun!
We're going to melt our soy wax using a "double-boiler" system. Let me explain, there are two (2) pots, one placed into the other. The larger pot boils the water while the smaller pot (pouring pitcher) holds the wax. This is the safest way to melt the wax and allows the wax to be evenly heated. It also allows you to easily control how fast the wax melts.
Directly heating wax on your stove top will cause it to burn and can be hazardous to you. Instead, were going to be smart by heating our wax using the double boiler.
Keep in mind that soy wax is soft. Therefore, it melts faster and burns easy. Most soy wax starts to melt at 120 F., but not all soy wax are the same. Some soy wax can be heated to 185 F., but most will start to burn if is heated higher than 160 F.
Note: Always consult the manufacturer's temperature guidelines for the specific soy wax you're using.
Some important information about the type of soy wax you're using may not be covered in these candle making instructions.
Are you ready? Let's continue....
1) Wash and dry your glass container (Make sure its completely dry).
2) Attach wick sticker to wick. If wick sticker is not available, you can also use a small amount of melted wax to anchor your wicks.
3) Put wick into center of glass container.
4) Insert the wick into the hole of the wick stick to keeps the wick centered while the wax cools.
5) Prepare an area right on your kitchen counter. Place a newspaper on the counter top for easy spillage clean up.
6) Fill your double boiler with water, using your empty pouring pitcher to get the desired water measurement. The bottom of the pouring pitcher should be submerged in water (about 1 inch).
7) Bring the water to a boil. After the water is boiling, immediately turn down the stove dial to low. Let the water cool down for a few minutes (approx. 4 min).
8) Add 1 pound of soy wax into your pouring pitcher.
9) Place the small pouring pitcher into pot of slightly cool down boiled water with a handle as a hinge. Insert your thermometer into wax to watch its temperature.
10) While the water remains on low, heat the wax to 140 F. add color chip until satisfied with color and stir.
Note: Always test your colors before you start pouring wax to a container or add fragrance. It will save you time and frustration! Believe me, been there done that.
11) When color chips and all the wax are melted. Remove the pouring pitcher from the heat and let it cool down.
12) While wax is cooling down, line up your already prepared glass container(s).
13) When wax cools to 125 F. add fragrance (We're using 1oz of your choice of fragrance oil in this project).
14) Stir well and slowly but carefully pour wax into glass container.
15) Check and make sure your wick is still centered.
16) Let the candle cool at room temperature overnight.
17) Trim wick to 1/4 inch before lighting and enjoy.
Viola!
