Kids Candle Project
Candle making is a fun way to get involved with your kids.
Kids candle project is kind of like baking cookies the only difference is this is BIG in enjoyment with no calories. It also requires minimal equipment and materials, and offers satisfyingly instant results.
Even crafty kids like to be able to see the fruits of their labor within minutes rather than days! One word of advice, for safety and enjoyment’s sakes, do not start this project unless you have a free afternoon. This is one kids craft project you want to savor, have fun, and not rush.
Before you start, set up your dining room.
a) Cover your table with a plastic tablecloth.
b) Put a variety of containers in the middle of the table, anywhere from 4 oz. to 12 oz. Choose containers that are easy to decorate.
c) Include wicks, stickers, and labels on the table.
d) Let your kids choose the color of wax that you’ll be preparing, along with the fragrance. Be prepared to have some funky colors, because kids like lots of colors! I usually do one color in one pouring pot and a 2nd color in another pot.
e) For safety reasons; I usually pre-melt the wax and remove from the double boiler.
f) Discuss some safety rules with your kids. Read the
candle making instructions
together and keep a fire extinguisher handy in case of a small fire.
g) Once you’re ready, gather them around your dining room table.
h) Have them stir the melted wax in the pouring pots, as the wax is cooling to 120 degrees.
Explain that when it reaches 120 degrees, you will be adding the fragrance. Let them sample the fragrances. As this is going on, teach them how to measure the containers and how to put the wicks into the container. Be sure the glass is clean and wipe out the inside of the containers beforehand with rubbing alcohol and a soft cloth to remove any fingerprints.
i) Once the wax looks like wet cream of wheat, it is time to pour. Pour the wax, insert the wick into the hole of Popsicle stick to keep wick centered while wax is cooling, and continue this process.
If you are layering colors, be sure to let the first layer dry for a good 20 minutes before topping it with another color.
j) Then for the final touch! Let the kids decorate the containers with ribbons and stickers.
k) Since this kids candle class is a group project, also asked them to help you clean up and put away all unused materials. It teaches them responsibility and team work.
The benefits of kids candle making class project….
You can do this anytime. In the comfort of your home.
This is an excellent time for bonding and for just getting to know each other. With my teenagers, they open up and talk about what’s happening at school or with their friends.
Better yet, invite some of their friends and get to know them too. See who your kids hang around with.
Teaches creativity
Create new candle designs
And it promotes team work
Ask your kids what they think about the candle class and if other kids their age might be interested in attending the same class in the future. My kids tell me "this is was cool mom." Kids are very insightful and honest. They will tell you exactly what they think! It always amazes me the things I learn from them. Ah…the young mind! I love it.
