Proper Wicking and Candle Burning Tips
Proper wicking is the most important element in candle making. The process of determining the proper wick size is based on the size and/or shape of the container.
1) Measure the inside dimensions of the container at its widest point. So, if you had a small square container you would measure the container diagonally across, this will give you a good idea of the inside diameter of the container.
2) Use double wick for a larger container 3.5” diameter and above for best performance.
Your results may vary depending on dye (color), fragrance, container shape and size, and burning condition. Proper wicking can be achieved by experimentation and test burning.
Scenting the Wick
Melt a little wax and add a few drops of fragrance. Immerse the wicks for 5 minutes then take them out and pull them straight. Lay them on greaseproof paper to harden. Let it sit for about 20 minutes, and then make your candles. This will give you long-lasting fragrance.
Candle Burning Tips and Tricks
We all love candles, their glow makes an intimate and comforting feeling with a touch of romance and a sense of warmth. But burning candles on a daily basis can get expensive; literally burning a hole in your wallet.
Here are some simple candle burning tips and tricks that will help you get the most out of your candles and save money.
1. Trim candle wicks to 1/8 inch from base each time before lighting. Long and crooked wicks cause uneven burning and create black soot. By making sure the wick is always at its proper level for burning, you will be assured of the maximum benefits from your candle.
2. Keep candle lit until liquefies to the edges every time. Estimated time to liquefy completely across is 1 hour per inch.
Larger container with 3” in diameter will need to burn approximately 3 hours.
If candle is put out sooner it creates a ledge. It means when the candle is lit again it will need extra time to correct itself. If you put the candle out early more than once or twice, it has a memory, leaving wax around the inner edge and therefore will not burn completely.
3. A good friend of mine showed me a cool trick when extinguishing a candle. She just dipped the wick into the liquid wax using a non-flammable instrument. Then straighten the wick to upright position. This technique eliminates the wick from smoking that creates ugly black soot around your container. What you have left is the beautiful aroma of your candle.
4. Remember, the liquid wax in your container will solidify again when it cools down. Do not pour the liquid wax in the garbage or your drain.
Votive Candle Care
1) Votive candles are design to liquefy. They must be burned in a snug-fitting container for it to burn correctly and completely.
2) How to remove votive candle from its container? Put the candle in the freezer for 10 minutes. The cold temperature will cause the wax to shrink and allow the candle to pop of the container.
By following these simple candle tips and tricks, you can keep your candles burning longer for a lot less!
